It was the first store at 34 Boulevard Saint-Germain in Paris.
"Diptyque" - a name as unique and complex as the construct for which it stands. French for diptych, it describes a two-part painting often encountered in Renaissance Italy. Like a two-piece amulet that reveals its precious treasure only when opened, the boutique diptyque Paris opens invitingly to the street. The meeting of three unique personalities is the founding hour of diptyque. A collective of artists: Christiane Montadre-Gautrot an architect, Desmond Knox-Leet a Scottish painter and Yves Coueslant a set designer - in 1961 the three friends made the decision to open a boutique with everything related to beautiful life. Equipped with a bold plan, the artistic trio let themselves be driven by their intuition and created a true shopping experience for all visitors - with art, music, conversations and, of course, extraordinary perfume creations. They gathered much inspiration in the adjacent Parisian nightclub Orphéon, which they later still integrated into their boutique. Their joint travels through Europe also provided them with lots of ideas. From there, they brought special decorative objects, luxurious fragrances and other treasures back to Paris.

They began designing ornately printed cotton fabrics and wallpapers and started selling fancy furniture and perfumes from around the world in their boutique "diptyque." In particular, the demand for exquisite fragrances for the home and body flourished and continued to grow. In 1963, the trio then designed the first own scented candle "Thé". For this Christiane Montadre-Gautrot procured fireproof laboratory jars from the pharmacy, in which she doused dried petals with high-quality wax. The flowers smelled wonderful when the candle was lit and the new business idea was born.
But that was not all. In 1968, the first perfume by diptyque, the eau de toilette "L'Eau" was launched. A timeless and classic fragrance with cinnamon and cloves that women and men alike can wear. The three founders broke a taboo with their first exclusive perfume: a unisex fragrance was still a scandal in the early 60s. But the "scandal fragrance" hit exactly the pulse of the time of the student movements for more equality.
