Brand portrait

Becoming a perfumer - for Francis Kurkdjian, this was not just the wishful thinking of a 15-year-old boy. The now award-winning perfume artist is one of the most sought-after "noses" in the world and creates extraordinary works of art in the field of niche fragrances with his brand Maison Francis Kurkdjian. Read more about the creation of the brand here.

From the perfumer behind major brands to award-winning perfume artist: the founding of Maison Francis Kurkdjian

His unique perfume creations, which never cease to surprise and reveal new facets of the art of olfaction, have earned him numerous awards and the status of one of the best "noses". After several creations for the most prestigious perfume manufacturers such as Burberry, Dior and Juliette has a gun, he began selling his eau de parfums under his own name with his brand Maison Francis Kurkdjian. Francis Kurkdjian's exclusive works of art Baccarat Rouge 540, Amyris Homme & Amyris Femme, Masculin Pluriel and Aqua Celestia - to name but a few - enrich the niche world of perfumes and bring with them an exclusive touch of luxury.

But how did Francis Kurkdjian become one of the most sought-after perfumers?

It seems as if he was born into it, as he decided to become a perfumer at the age of 15. Five years later, he began his training in Versaille and the start of a great career.
Originally from Armenia, the perfumer found his destiny in perfumery and put down roots in the capital of perfume: Paris. His training at the Institut Superiéur International du Parfum and his collaboration with the world's largest perfume houses made him world-famous early on. Thanks to his prestigious creations such as "Le Male" for Jean Paul Gaultier and "for her" for Narciso Rodriguez, his name has become very well known in the perfume scene.

Francis Kurkdjian even became so well known that in 2001 he was awarded the "François Coty" prize for his life's work, probably the highest honour that can be bestowed on a perfumer. The prize is named after the founder of modern perfumery himself and is one of the most important in the perfume scene.

Maison Francis Kurkdjian was born out of an encounter in 2009: the popular perfume artist Francis Kurkdjian and the co-founder and president of the fragrance house, Marc Chaya, shared a common desire. A multifaceted olfactory richness that they wanted to give shape to through all possible sensory forms of expression. They are establishing their Maison Francis Kurkdjian brand as a new landmark in the world of exclusive niche fragrances - thanks to the right mix of long-standing expertise and the charm of the French lifestyle.

The Maison Francis Kurkdjian brand describes itself as the fragrance house of an artist - a personal perfume wardrobe by Francis Kurkdjian, for which he selects the finest ingredients from all over the world and combines them into unique compositions. His fragrance wardrobe is a myriad of emotions and scents and inspires him to constantly create new perfumes thanks to its many different facets. He combines modern and artistic traits with the classic ones, preserving the tradition of classical French perfumery. He turns the world of perfume into something intimate and deeply individual. In his eyes, the perfume and the wearer become one - and he pursues this vision with every new perfume he creates.

Maison Francis Kurkdjian is driven by the incredible precision of Francis Kurkdjian. He creates a fragrance territory that is at once free and sensual, but also dominated by the delicate perfectionism of the artist. He lovingly describes his perfumes as "sensory adventures", which, thanks to the guiding principles of purity, timelessness, sophistication and bold creative joy, become the incomparable niche fragrances that inspire the whole world.

ACTIVE INGREDIENTS & PROCESSING

Francis Kurkdjian creates his fragrances according to all the rules of the French art of perfumery - but sometimes he breaks them. Find out here how the unique fragrance compositions benefit from modern views and exquisite ingredients.

The perfumes from Maison Francis Kurkdjian are skilful synergies of haute perfumery and stylistic disruptions on a molecular level. Compositions of organic substances put together with the precision of a chemical formula enhance the individual raw materials with their respective concentrations in a special and even experimental way. Selected synthetic fragrances complement the numerous essential fragrance oils.

With such accuracy, it is not surprising that the conception of his perfumes takes between three months and a year to achieve the perfume artist's perfection.

In his perfume wardrobe, the perfumer pays attention to certain basic concepts such as gender-neutral ingredients and the silent or sonorous world of flowers. However, certain fragrance outfits such as his Sunny Notes or the aquatic scents of the Aqua Collection are also presented here, as they simply suit everyone:

  • "Sunny Notes"
Sunny notes whisk us away to hot beaches and light-flooded holiday destinations all year round - an escape from everyday life and pure relaxation. With his Sunny Notes, Francis Kurkdjian wants to evoke this holiday flair. What is essential for this: the notes of warm sand, white flowers and a fresh sea breeze. His perfumes that spread Sunny Notes are characterised by a variety of floral aromas such as jasmine, orange blossom, tuberose and frangipani. They are complemented by the exotic scents of fresh fruit: coconut, mango and fig create an olfactory tropical paradise. Soft, sensual, slightly spicy and above all very fruity, the aromas of the sun in Kurkdjian's Sunny Notes are beguiling.

  • Aqua Collection
His Aqua Collection is indispensable for Francis Kurkdjian: freshness for perfume is the same as water for life on earth - it is essential and indispensable. With his trilogy Aqua Universalis, Aqua Vitae, Aqua Celestia, he not only brings incredible freshness to his perfumes, but also purity and lightness. Inspired by the airy Eau de Colognes the light fragrances, inspired by flowing water, exude a pure aesthetic and caress the wearer with a sense of well-being and self-confidence. Crystal clear, refreshing, sensual and with a hint of spice, the aquatic fragrances exude an incredible sillage.

  • Silent flowers
Francis Kurkdjian reveals a secret about his floral ingredients: There are flowers whose fragrant essence can be adopted almost directly into a perfume (rose, magnolia, jasmine, tuberose, mimosa, narcissus, orange blossom, ylang ylang, broom, cassia) and there are others that disguise the composition of their fragrance and present perfumers with the challenge of recreating this scent. These include, for example, lily of the valley, lilies, lilacs, violets and peony. How does the perfume artist work with these mute flowers? In order not to have to do without the exquisite fragrance components of the silent flora in his creations, he relies on a molecule, synthetic hydroxycitronellal, which covers many facets of the silent floral world with its light, powdery floral scent and can be emphasised in different combinations. The world of flowers plays an essential role in Kurkdjian's perfumes, because he not only appreciates their diversity, but also the scope for development in perfume creation.

  • Gender-neutral or unisex ingredients
According to Francis Kurkdjian, raw materials have no gender, and it is up to the perfumer alone to create a perfume that can be worn by both men and women through skilful composition. Maison Francis Kurkdjian goes against existing categorisations of fragrance notes with the perfumer's works of perfume art. Kurkdjian emphasises that not every woman likes floral notes and not every man likes harsh leather notes. What is decisive for him are the emotions that a fragrance with its individual ingredients arouses in its wearer. The wealth of olfactory facets of a single ingredient reveals the potential when the raw materials are put together and completely different sides are emphasised depending on the dosage or combination. Maison Francis Kurdjian does not aim to appeal to a specific gender with its exquisite ingredients, but to the individual who is attracted to the fragrance.

APPLICATION

Whether luxury perfume, intense extrait de parfum, body cream or body oil ... Maison Francis Kurkdjian offers a wide range of application options. Here we show you how you can wear your luxury perfume.

The luxury products from Maison Francis Kurkdjian and their many uses:

A perfume for all situations? Those days are long gone, emphasises Francis Kurkdjian. The perfumer lets feelings and thoughts decide when it comes to perfume creation. And that is precisely why a single perfume cannot be suitable for all situations in life. His creations include perfumes and care products for the morning and evening, for the office or a date - a different fragrance for every situation in life.

  1. A luxurious niche perfume differs from conventional perfumes in terms of its fragrance oil concentration and the intensity of the scent. Spray on selectively and do not apply too much. The fragrance oil concentration in niche perfumes and their extrait de parfum is so high that just a few sprays are enough to enjoy the scent of the perfume all day long. For a particularly long-lasting scent, we recommend spraying your perfume on your hair, behind your earlobe or in the crook of your elbow.

  2. The exclusive fragrances from Maison Francis Kurkdjian also like to pamper your whole body: with silky body creams, Body Oils or Scented Hair Mist, you can wear your favourite fragrance from the perfume artist all over your body. The fragrant care products are designed to have the same scent as the original. Enriched with caring nutrients, they pamper and provide a multi-sensory experience. The Scented Hair Mist is specially formulated without alcohol so as not to dry out the hair. The Body Cream and the Body Oil are easy to apply and absorb well without leaving a greasy residue.

  3. Always have your exclusive perfume from Maison Francis Kurkdjian with you thanks to the practical travel and refill sets. Small and handy, the travel-size perfume bottles (11 ml) fit in any bag. The best thing is that you can enjoy the luxurious scent of Maison Francis Kurkdjian fragrances anytime and anywhere without having to take your original size perfume with you. Whether for refilling or for travelling - this offer from the perfume artist is well thought out and extremely practical for all perfume lovers.

PARIS in STYLE

"My personal favourite is the red crystal bottle in collaboration with Baccarat. If I had to pick a favourite perfume ever it would be Baccarat Rouge 540. It's so perfectly balanced, both woody and floral, combining jasmine blossom and woody musk."

VOGUE

"Back when attending winter galas was possible, Maison Francis Kurkdjian's Grand Soir would have been the ideal scent for an evening out. Nightlife of the Parisian variety was Kurkdjian's inspiration for the heady mix of cistus labdanum-a natural resin with a smell similar to the prized ambergris-vanilla, and amber. While it's easy to imagine someone hitting the town in a tux or ballgown while wearing Grand Soir, it shouldn't be reserved for special occasions. The fragrance's appeal lies in the daily dose of glamour it can provide."
