Of untamed animal worlds & unique designs: niche perfumes from Zoologist
Even for the niche world, Zoologist's perfumes are special. Inspired by the animal kingdom, the intense extrait de parfums perfectly capture each animal and its characteristics in a fragrance. But how did the former video game developer come up with this unconventional idea?
The Canadian perfume brand for unique luxury and niche perfumes, based in Toronto, was founded in 2013 by Victor Wong.
A global fragrance brand with 21 fragrances released in the years since its inception, the brand collaborates with internationally renowned perfumers and is an integral part of the indie perfume scene.
Inspired by the habitats, behaviours and appearance of the many animals, the various perfumers capture the majesty, uniqueness and beauty of the animal kingdom in their fragrances.
At first, the founder of Zoologist, Victor Wong, could not believe his success. What originally started as a hobby turned into a passion for life. Wong quit his old job in the video game sector and dedicated himself to his brand with the extraordinary idea: to produce the scents of the animal world as exclusive niche perfumes. Zoologist perfumes stand for the return to nature, to our instincts, to simplicity and yet the special.
The key moment that was the decisive turning point in Victor Wong's career was a stay in a hotel. The fine cosmetics and their fragrances so excited the zoologist-founder that he took up perfumery as a hobby.
Thanks to this unusual idea, he won the approval of numerous renowned perfumers who have already created fragrances for selected animals - and the animal fragrance repertoire will continue to grow steadily.
The special thing about the brand, which is truly "zoologist-like", besides the absolutely unique fragrances, is the extremely creative design: elegant flacons in the colours black and gold and imprinted: a rhinoceros in stately uniform, a beaver in a noble suit and bow tie or an octopus with a shell-adorned collar and stately sceptre.
Just three years after its founding, an animal from the Zoologist roster won the Arts and Olfaction Award: Bat was honoured in 2016 and the brand was even reviewed in an award-winning article in the New York Times.
In 2020, two Zoologist perfumes were among the finalists for the Arts and Olfaction Award: Bee and Squid. This prize is awarded in the perfume scene for particularly artistic and experimental perfumes released by independent perfume brands.

The composition of animal fragrance essences: Zoologist perfumers reveal their recipes
Translating the scent of an animal into a perfume – a seemingly impossible task? Zoologist's perfumers perform this miracle time and time again. Two reveal their approach to the animal-pleasing scents
Facetted, exotic and, above all, intense - the fragrance flavours of Zoologist perfumes seem to know no bounds. Unlike all other perfume brands, Zoologist fragrances do not try to come close to the measure of a fragrant perfume. They stand for authentic fragrances that reflect nature. Not manufactured for the masses, they occupy a special place in the world of niche perfumery.
We would like to look at two perfumes and their compositions to see what skills perfumers are juggling to imitate the unique scents of the animal kingdom.
It's all about the two finalists of the Art and Olfaction Awards 2020: Bee and Squid, created by Cristiano Canali and Celine Barel.
- "Bee" by Cristiano Canali
For his final thesis of his studies in pharmacy, Cristiano Canali dealt a lot with Ayurvedic products from the Hindu healing art. Working closely with local producers in his homeland Italy not only taught him a wealth of knowledge about natural active ingredients, but also sparked his interest in the art of perfumery. In his perfume compositions, he uses the ingredients in such a way that he can perfectly emphasise the synergies and contrasts. This way always allows for novel compositions, depending on which ingredients are chosen. His undisputed favourite ingredients in perfumes are sandalwood and beeswax, which he also incorporates into the fragrances of Bee.
Nature served as his inspiration with its minimalism and complexity at the same time: a meadow of flowers rich in blossoms, the dripping nectar of flowers, but also heavy musk notes mixed with the creamy texture of sandalwood enrich the incredibly multifaceted scent of Bee. Contrastingly, it confronts the smoky aromas of benzoin with a delicate vanilla. The perfumer emphasises that no real honey was used in his fragrance for the honey bee. He brings in the "royal jelly" accord through another key ingredient, beeswax. This component runs through the top, heart and base notes to echo the beating wings of busy bees. Surrounded by lovely orange concentrate, ginger syrup, broom and mimosa, Canali creates a scenario of a flowery meadow peppered with soft and sugary accents. With its convincingly authentic ingredients, Bee invites you on an olfactory journey of a bee that lets you experience the world through its eyes. The constant focus in the composition of the fragrance: the concentration on perception, one's own intuition, the sillage of the perfume and a certain intimacy. - "Squid" by Celine Barel
The challenge of capturing the scent of a squid was taken on by Celine Barel. Enamoured by the brilliant idea behind Zoologist, the perfumer could identify directly with the imaginative animal world and also wanted to give the squid an "olfactory identity". The perfume "Squid" has nothing to do with the usual fishy smell, but entrains us into the dark and somewhat ominous depths of the ocean among all the giant squids.
For the intro, Celine Barel chooses a good mix of some melancholy and of course ink, characteristic of an octopus. She also puts a lot of emphasis on contrasts: the difference between a light and dark mind, the stormy and gentle side of an octopus.
The discovery of her base note happened unexpectedly on a holiday before she began the work on Squid. She injured herself on a squid bone and discovered its exceptionally haunting scent. It now forms the base notes, with its airy-light but also very salty notes. But the octopus bone also contains ethereal and floral notes, which is why Barel includes some incense in the top note. The perfumer can bring the gentle yet extreme aromas of the octopus bone into her fragrance composition thanks to naturally occurring raw materials called "Solar Salycylate". This raw material combines the contrasting components: powerful, salty, floral, airy, ethereal.
The blue colouring of the perfume stands for the ink accord. For this one, the perfumer went in search of blue raw materials to express the impression of the salty-velvety notes she associates with the ink of an octopus. To create the special density and texture, she incorporates balsams and resins into the perfume's azure essence. The result is a marine fragrance of a very different kind and not comparable to the existing oceanic scents: refined with amber, it has a sensual side, is fresh and salty like a sea breeze, but also spicy thanks to pepper, musk and incense.

"Sloth", for example, is infused with relaxing aromas that encourage deceleration. Many calming aromatherapy ingredients combined with mossy accents, embody the serenity of Sloth. The moss aromas were chosen because of the extreme slowness of sloths, which allows for the cultivation of moss on their fur.
The zoologist-founder has already received many compliments with Sloth: He seems well-balanced and smells like a well-dressed gentleman. The essence of Zoologist in a nutshell – the concept seems to be working.
He achieves his intentions of letting the good qualities of animals become his own through the extremely high fragrance oil concentration of up to 25 %, which makes wearing the fragrance a very intense and memorable experience.
